CAKE DESIGNS: 22 Cub Scout Bake Off Idea's #Cubscouts #Boyscouts #Cakes

This year has been a major milestone in my son's life.  He is about to complete his first year as a Tiger Cub Scout and cross over the bridge and become a Wolf Cub Scout.  One of his major accomplishments that he did this year was to learn how to bake.

The annual Cubscout Bake Off was the perfect place to learn.  The boys were encouraged to do as much of the baking as possible with their Akeela's (adult) help for safety.

When we were looking for ideas of what theme he would like, there was an over-whelming amount of creations, all scattered in various places.  My son ultimately chose the shark theme and we found a similar recipe on-line to help him along.

I thought I would help put together 22 images of our pack's awesome designs.  The boys had a great time and we enjoyed watching Dispicable Me 2 while the judges looked over the cakes.  The best part of the evening was that we all had a chance to sample the cakes after the judging!  My son won the Most Artistic and I am SO proud!

PET PROTECTION: Foxtails: A Hidden Danger and a Trip to the Vet

Most of the time I write about my family's adventures having fun and doing things together.  One my family members that doesn't get a lot of mention but almost always comes with us is our dog Brittany.

We consider her an important member of our family.  She protects us, goes camping, hunting, plays and gives us comfort.  We would do anything for her as she clearly does all she can for us.

Last week, I had to rush her to the vet because of a hazard that I had never given much thought about before.  Our backyard grass doesn't always have the weed control that it needs and a certain weed was taking over our little used side yard.

We had just gotten back from a weekend away and we noticed that she was chewing her feet and licking one paw excessively.  On further examination, I saw a puncture wound, redness and swelling.  The weed responsible is the common foxtail.  I checked out the rest of her body and removed about 10 foxtails.  I immediately made an appointment with our vet to remove the burrowed fox-tail from her foot.

This last weekend, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park opened one their most memorable exhibits, Tiger Trail!  While Tiger Trail didn't open to the public until Memorial Day, I was lucky to have been invited with my daughter for a sneak preview.

We were invited, along with other animal and photo enthusiasts, to check out this spectacular set of exhibits that show-case the San Diego Zoo's Safari Park's push to save the tigers by ensuring a great breeding program.  The  exhibits allow the visitors to get an up close and personal look at these magnificent creatures in as wild of a setting as possible.

STAYCATION: Knott's Berry Farm Has My Vote! | @Knotts #KnottsPass #SoakCityOC

With the end of the school year fast approaching, we have been chomping at the bit to go somewhere, anywhere.  It is hard to relax when we have so many things going on already.  Between school, baseball, softball, cubscouts, and all of the extra events we do, my family is just plain exhausted.

We NEEDED a vacation!  Where could we go that we could get a little break and at the same time celebrate my 7 year old birthday?  We only had 2 days really so we felt that a "stay-cation" would be the best solution.

Thanks to Knotts Berry Farm, our answer was closer than we thought.   I received notice that Knotts Soak City was to open on my sons birthday and we were invited!   The bonus was that we had also received an invite to check out the newly remodeled Knotts Hotel!

Honestly, before a few months ago, I was not aware that Knotts Berry Farm HAD a hotel!  I was curious!

SHOW REVIEW: Circus Vargas' Magikaria Extreme | @CircusVargas #Magikaria

This week, my family enjoyed the always enjoyable Circus Vargas show at the Irvine Spectrum.  I would like to share with you our favorite moments of the evening.

It had been quite a few years since I had seen Circus Vargas and honestly, I had forgotten how much fun it is!  Magikaria, is their latest show and it is filled with humor, acrobatics, magic, trampolines and more.

These long scarves held up the acrobats flying through the sky.

The Magicians ram spikes through their assistants!  YIKES!

Why yes, that IS a ladder he is balancing on his chin!  AMAZING!

The acrobat could do anything on this! Jump rope, blind-folded and more!

It was a hot day when we went so we enjoyed an intermission with nachos and lots of water!

How do they do that!  Swords through people!

The families that make up Circus Vargas show their love in everything they do! Here they made a heart.

The trampoline act was my kids favorites with the cops and bad guys.

The finale was filled with dance and "snow"!  Too bad it wasn't real because it was a really hot week!

Check out Circus Vargas before they leave!  It was a fun show for the whole family!

CAMPING: A Day at Kennedy Meadows #Camping #KennedyMeadows #Fishing

During spring break, we wanted to get away for a little fun.  Our area of choice was Kennedy Meadows.  If you haven't heard of it, I am not surprised.  It is a little known camping area about 3 hours north of us on the Kern River.

Imagine a camping area where you can dirt-bike ride, hunt, hike, camp, fish and gold prospect all in one area!

Product Review: Cool Off in a Backyard Ocean Pool! | @BackyardOcean #Review

This last week has been horrible at our house!  The weather has been so dry that we feel that staying inside in air conditioning, might be the only answer.  The beach is great but the water is still on the cold side.  What else is there?

I was offered to review an above ground pool by Backyard Ocean just in time!  Our yard is not large by any means and I had wondered if it was worth getting a pool.  Would the kids use it?  How hard would it be to clean?  How hard would it be to set up?

Rubio's 3rd Annual CoastFest: Beach Cleanup, Music Festival, Free Food & More | @RubiosTweets #CoastFest

Rubio’s Hosts 3rd Annual CoastFest; Invites Community to Come Together to Celebrate the Ocean

Covering more than 72 percent of the planet, the ocean is the primary source of food for more than 3.5 billion people. Each year between 70 and 75 million tons of fish are caught in the ocean, making it the largest source of wild and domestic protein in the world. With this in mind, Rubio’s works to be a friend to the ocean year-round with a majority of its seafood being sourced from sustainable fisheries, recycling plastic and glass bottles in restaurants whenever possible, using eco-friendly plates and to-go containers and supporting ocean focused causes.

On May 10, the brand known for its craveable coastal cuisine and popularizing the fish taco is inviting all Southern California residents to its 3rd annual Rubio’sCoastFest – a free celebration of the ocean complete with beach cleanup, complimentary food and drinks, music festival, VIP beer garden, educational components, activities for attendees of all ages and more in Oceanside, Calif.

Researchers say the world’s oceans are at a critical point in their existence, from climate changes and ocean acidification, to poor fishing practices and pollution. The actions taken to protect the oceans throughout the next 10 years will determine the state of the oceans for the next 10,000 years.

For these reasons and so many more, Rubio’s has counted the ocean as a source of inspiration and resource since the restaurant’s founding more than 30 years ago.

After an incredibly successful 2013 celebration that launched Rubio’s ‘To the Ocean’ campaign and saw a record turnout, this year’s CoastFest is even bigger and better.

With more than 1,600 attendees expected to join the festivities at the Oceanside Pier on May 10, the celebration will kick off at 10 a.m.. with community members going the extra nautical mile at a beach cleanup hosted by I Love a Clean San Diego

Last year’s efforts resulted in more than 350 pounds of trash being removed from the coastline.

This year, beach cleanup participants should bring a bucket, gloves, sun protection and a reusable water bottle. For more beach cleanup information, please visit: www.rubios.com/CoastFest.

Following the beach cleanup, the celebration begins and includes:
  • CoastFest activities – this year’s celebration is full of exciting freebies and activities, including: prizes from the Rubio’s prize wheel, surf lessons, a mobile aquarium, face painting, an inflatable jumpy house and a photo booth to capture the day’s memories.
  • Complimentary food and drinks – guests will be able to enjoy a Rubio’s sustainable Grilled or Blackened Regal Springs® Taco, handmade guacamole featuring Hass avocados and chips, freshly prepared salsa, beverages and more.
  • Music festival – guests are invited to visit the main stage throughout the celebration for free live music from a collection of local Southern California bands, as well as FM 94/9. Musical acts include: Jet West, a reggae/rock band from San Diego that fuses traditional rock with elements of reggae and hard rock and Bad Neighborz, a 2012 San Diego Music Award nominee for Best Artist. Families can also enjoy live, interactive performances from Clint Perry & The Boo Hoo Crew in the Kid’s Zone.
  • VIP Beer Garden – a new addition to this year’s CoastFest, Rubio’s has added a VIP beer garden to the celebration – featuring Karl Strauss beer and Lolailo Sangria.
  • Kids’ Zone educational elements – Rubio’s understands that the ocean makes everything it does possible and in turn is passionate about educating future generations. To ensure a love of the ocean is passed down, the Ocean Institute’s “Ocean in Motion” aquarium touch tank, as well as the mobile learning center courtesy of the Wyland Foundation® will be on site for children of all ages.
  • Complimentary surf lessons – onsite surf lessons will be available to attendees from Surfin’ Fire.
This year’s event partners include: I Love a Clean San Diego, Dr Pepper, Ocean Institute, Spy Optics, Wyland Foundation, Birch Aquarium, UCSD Sustainability Department, Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation, Honest Tea, Regal Springs® Tilapia, Trident, Lolailo Sangria, Karl Strauss, Surfin' Fire, Cox Communications and more.

With every movie my family goes to lately, Planes: Fire & Rescue teases us with trailers.  My kids are forever asking when they can see Dusty again.

Disney's Planes was a huge hit last year and all year long we have had air races with a variety of paper airplanes.  My kids have so much fun with anything related to the original movie and I am excited to be able to bring my children and yours activities to keep them busy until Planes: Fire & Rescue comes out in 3D on July 18, 2014.
