TRAVEL: Texas State Aquarium | @TXStateAquarium #BlogSwap #Texas

Texas State Aquarium
This week, I’m lucky enough to be guest-blogging for Kirstin here at SoCal Kids Outdoor Adventures. Being part of SoCal Lady Bloggers, I was able to sign up and be a part of “Walk a Mile in Another Blogger’s Shoes;” created and organized by the one and only AJ Feuerman who blogs at Confessions of a Fat Girl. Thank you Kirstin and AJ for this fun opportunity!

With spring holidays and summer breaks coming up, many families are traveling all over the country—visiting relatives, seeing sights, and looking for things to do and see. If you happen to be in South Texas—specifically, Corpus Christi—I have a great suggestion for you.

The Texas State Aquarium is a premier non-profit aquarium that showcases the habitats of the Gulf of Mexico. First opening in 1990, it became a federally permitted animal rehab facility in 1993.

Disney's Mock "Dole Whip" Recipe: Quick, Simple and Homemade! | #Disney #Dessert

Being raised in SoCal, I spent much of time at Disneyland.  The rides I love but there are a few items that are must haves in my book. The Dole Whip is my number one purchase!

If you have not had a Dole Whip, really, you haven't been to Disneyland or you are allergic to pineapples.  It is the one dessert that I splurge on while there.  I am not talking about splurging on money, it is precious time that gets used up while in the Dole Whip line.

The line usually wraps through Tomorrowland and past the Jungle Cruise!  Often an hour long wait.  Is it worth it?  Yes!  E.V.E.R.Y. minute.

Since it has been awhile since my last trip to Disneyland, I thought I would experiment and try and re-create the masterpiece at home.  Using only 3-5 ingredients, it took me about 10 minutes to find the right combination to perfect my recipe.

Springtime Petstravaganza: Family Pet Expo at the OC Fair & Event Center | @OCFair #GIVEAWAY

While I usually talk about my two-legged kids, my four legged kids are never far behind in our adventures.  In my house, we have 1 dog, 2 cats and 3 fish.  However, in the past, I have had turtles, birds, rats, hamsters, crawdads, sugar-gliders, snakes and more!

Being a temporarily-retired animal keeper/animal trainer, I have been exposed to many different animals with different needs.  Where can the average family find the right products to take care of our furry families?

Walking With Dinosaurs: DVD/Blu-Ray Giveaway and Printables! | @FHEInsiders #WalkingWithDinosaursDVD

On March 25, my son will be the ecstatic owner of Walking With Dinosaurs as it comes out on Blu-ray™ and DVD then.  However, I surprised him today with being able to watch it on his smart-phone and iPad with the help of MoGo.  He can now watch it on the go along with all of his favorites.

Having the ability to play my kids favorite movies for them while waiting for practices to be over or on long car trips is definitely a relief.  The back-seat arguing and boredom has been drastically changed.  My husband and I are able to have a conversation in the front seat as my kids are now enthralled with their favorite movies.

One of the BEST things about watching the movies on M-GO was the Digital HD is out BEFORE the movies are available on Blu-Ray/DVD!  While most of my kids friends parents are waiting in line at their favorite store for the Blu-Ray/DVD, we have already had the movie for weeks!

Lawn Battleship: Battle on the Lawn! Now Live | @Kickstarter #LawnBattleship #ad

As you know, we are big on camping and the outdoors.  Besides dirt-bike riding, sitting by the camp-fire, gold prospecting, and hiking, we also enjoy camp games.

We play Bocce Ball, Cornhole, Horse-shoes and more.  I was approached recently with a new kind of game that can be played out camping or even just on your own lawn at home.  You know the game Battleship and you know lawn bowling, this new game brings a combination of two in a an exciting family fun game.

Lawn Battleship creates family fun so intense, everyone will ask for the best three-out-of-five to prove who is the true master of your lawn. It’s a family friendly game that relies on accuracy and skill. The concept is simple; toss the ball to disable your opponents fleet; or sink ships with direct hits. To win you must be the last ship standing. Flexible setup gives you control of the challenge level, making this a game for all ages.

Check out how to set up and play, below:

In development, play testing and prototyping for over five years, LAWN BATTLESHIP is now live on Kickstarter with proven game mechanics and final artwork. The Kickstarter campaign features the game at $65, including free shipping to individuals in the United States.

Through their Kickstarter campaign, Lawn Battleship is battling for the funding it needs for mass production. In order to take Lawn Battleship to the next level, they need your support.

Spring Has Sprung at Knotts w/ Knotts Berry Bloom | @Knotts #KnottsSpring

Spring is in the air with all of our warm weather we have been having.  Okay, who am I kidding, we ALWAYS have this great weather!  But seriously, with the little rain we had recently, my grass is growing and the flowers are blooming.

This spring weather makes us want to get outside and have fun!  I feel sorry for all of the rest of the country that is still under sleet and snow but that is why we live in sunny California.

One place that blooms beautifully in Southern California is Knotts Berry Farm!  Have you heard of Knott's Berry Bloom?  From April 12-27, larger-than-life decor, entertainment and boysenberries will be the main focus.

Divers Day at Aquarium of the Pacific: Free Admission | @AquariumPacific #SCUBA

Photo Credit: Aquarium of the Pacific
As a SCUBA diver of more than 20 years, I have seen a large variety of marine life.  I have been spoiled in the fact that I learned how to dive off the waters of Southern California.  In fact, I learned how to dive off the beautiful Island of Santa Catalina.

The waters off Southern California have some of the most beautiful diving in the world and people from all over to experience the diverse ecosystem.  If you aren't a SCUBA diver, the next best thing to see our marine ecosystem, is to visit the Aquarium of the Pacific.

Free Pancakes at Mimi's Cafe, Check it Out! | @MimisCafe #ComeBacktoMimis

One of our favorite things to do for a special treat is to make pancakes at home on the rare occasion that we are actually home.  We are so often on the go, it is hard to squeeze in those fun pancake mornings and as you all know, food always tastes better when someone else cooks it.

About once or twice a month, we make a point of having a special eat out breakfast where mom gets a break from cooking.  There are so many choices for a great breakfast joint but one of our favorite places, Mimi's Cafe, just made it easier.
When we make our special outing at Mimi's Cafe next time, the kids 12 and under will get a special invitation back to an all you can eat pancake feast free when at adult purchases an entree $10 or more*.
Which means that on their next visit, while the adults are enjoying Mimi’s classic comfort dishes such as Mimi’s slow-roasted pot roast, crispy Fish & Chips, and creamy Artichoke Chicken Penne, kids will get to indulge in their favorite breakfast-for-dinner treat!

Don't worry if your kids are not pancake fans, Mimi's will treat them to other kid meals, such as chicken fingers or mini corn dogs.

Mimi's likes us adults to come too, it isn't like the kids could drive themselves.  They are offering not only the kids free pancakes, they are giving us a $5 off coupon for our next visit too!  Don't accidentally throw away your receipt!

Mimi's Cafe wants us to relax and enjoy our family moments by letting us be together and letting us moms have hot meals too!  I can't wait to have a hot meal! LOL

So, whether we are young or old, the next time you visit Mimi’s, be prepared to get your very own special invitation back. Because Mimi’s can’t wait to see you again!

*Children must be present to receive this offer
**Excludes tax and gratuity. Cannot be used with any other offers or discounts. May not be copied or reproduced

DISCLAIMER:  We were given a gift card to create family time at Mimi's Cafe and enjoy a free breakfast on them.  All thoughts and ideas are my own.

"Super-Lice": Our New Nemesis at School! | @CozyCutsforKids #Natural #Prevention

I don't know about you but it seems like every week I get a note in my children's backpacks warning that they were exposed to some horrible ailment!  My children have been exposed to RSV, MRSA, Chickenpox, pink eye, and most recently, lice.

I distinctly remember as a child being doused in foul smelling chemicals and having to sit for what seemed like hours to get rid of nits in my long hair.  NOT a process I would wish on anyone.

It has been brought to my attention that there is a new strain of lice called "super lice".  It is more resistant to all of the tried and true lice chemicals!  What do we use on our delicate children?  Stronger chemicals?  I am not thrilled with that prospect.

Free Kids Fishing Derby: Mile Square Park! | @OCParks #Fishing

I know that many of us are deep into the spring baseball season and don't have much time for anything else on our plates but there is one thing we all need to make time for, fishing.

We are lucky that despite all of the budget cuts in our state, OC Parks, Orange County Supervisor, Janet Nguyen, Dept of Fish and Wildlife and Angler Chronicles have still been able to provide our community with the annual Kids Fishing Derby.  Held at the North Lake at Mile Square Park, it is on March 15, from 9am - Noon.

Imaginology Moves “Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead”
at the OC Fair & Event Center April 11-13

You might have seen my post about how much fun we had at the Orange County Youth Expo last year.

It is a great free, family event with a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math.  We were so impressed by the air powered rockets that we made our own that night at home!

Favorite Family Moments @Knotts Berry Farm | #KnottsPass #Giveaway

I have been asked many times about season passes to the various theme parks in our area.  Which one do I have?  Which is the best deal for the money?

In the past, I have had many answers.  We have had all of the seasonal passes at one point or another because we live in close proximity to all of the theme parks.  While my family have been pass-holders for Disney probably the longest, we have been finding it more difficult to buy the annual passes because the cost for a family of 4 is harder to save up for.  Now that our kids are in school, the lower cost passes are not available when we would want to use them.

The Book Thief: Great Read for Book Clubs! Coming to Blu-ray/DVD | @FHEInsiders #BookThiefDigitalLibrary

The Book Thief is a movie that emotionally moves you.  It is uniquely narrated by the Angel of Death who finds the main character,(Liesel) so interesting, it makes him long to experience life itself.

It is a story of Liesel(Sophie Nelisse) who is sent away from her mother during World War II because her mother is a communist.  Adopted by a German couple (Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson), she is loved and cared for in her absence.  Liesel arrived without knowing how to even write her name.

SteamPunk Carnivale is Coming to Orange Empire Railway Museum! | @OrangEmpireRail #Giveaway #Steampunk

Get Ready for Some Good Old-fashioned Fun at a Family Steampunk Carnivale at the Orange Empire Railway Museum.

What is Steam Punk you ask?

It is an aesthetic movement based on the concept that Jules Verne and H.G. Wells were right about the future. Instead of cars and computers, we would have steam engines and air ships. Clothes stay more Victorian without the automotive revolution and mass production. Artisans and "Makers" are heroes. And adventures are entertainment.

Native Skills Summer Camp: Kids Summer Camp for the Natural Way #SummerCamp #Survival

Do you have an outdoorsy child from 7-14 that is looking for a summer camp unlike any other?  I discovered a wonderful camp that teaches the kids all about Native American survival skills.  The Coast Live Oak School teaches skills that were thought to be mostly forgotten.

Native Skills Camps run from June through August and only allow 10 students per session.

The kids at Coast Live Oak School learn how to build forts, making things with their hands and get the chance to explore creeks, woods and learn all about the outdoors.

Students will be learning to meet basic human needs of shelter, water, fire, and food in simple and practical ways… without using knives or other modern conveniences. Along the way they will be learning how to see the natural world and their relationship to it in a more direct way.
